Is it necessary to remove fuel tank completely to replace the guage or can I just drop the tank in situ....assuming the guage is on top? Couldn't find any technical queries category. Any advise please?

You'll need a fair bit of clearance to unscrew the gauge and then withdraw it from the top of the tank. So you'll need to lower the tank probably to the ground, which will need its filler tube to be released from the rubber boot where it passes through the rear bodywork, and the petrol pipes leading to and from the pump to be released from the tank. So dropping the tank "in situ" doesn't really save anything. You may just as well remove the tank and work on it with plenty of room around it.
It's a shame the Austin didn't put an access hatch in the boot floor - that would have mande replacing the fuel gauge sender much easier.
