awful pong

An elderly driver asked her local garage to find the source of an occasional awful pong in her car. They assumed it would be overheating brakes or clutch, perhaps a dead mouse or spilt milk causing the problem but no, nothing was found. They road tested it and found nothing wrong, so in desperation a mechanic accompanied the owner on another test run.
He was quite alarmed at the way his customer would cheerfully pull out against oncoming traffic, zoom unconceredly over cross roads and barrel around blind corners. But the car behaved perfectly.
Until, that is, they were coming up to a rural, unmanned level crossing with no barriers. Spotting an approaching train, the car driver floored the throttle and they howled across with just a thirty foot gap in front of the locomotive. As they shot on along the country lane the driver suddenly cried, "There ! There's that awful pong !"
