Tyre Size

Hi all, I have recently purchased an A40 to use in hillclimbs and sprints.
I have a set of 5.5 x 13 alloys and am interested to know what tyres and size, other people are fitting with no clearance issues.
Thanks in advance, Roger Coote.

A warm welcome to our forums, Roger, and I'm sure we all wish you well in your endeavours.

I'm not experienced in competitive sports but I hope some of our experts on here will soon give some hints.

We compete in Historic Rallies but use only 5" wheels. 165/65 x13 present no problems & suspect a 175 may be possible.
I imagine Trevor Parfitt will be the one to answer this question.

My road car has Bridgestone 175 70 R 13 fitted on 5.5" steel wheels, not sure of offsets re your ali wheels. UCE uses Dunlop Historic 5.50 13 L race tyres. For a mix of road and track perhaps a Yokohama or Toyo would fit the bill as some of their 'faster' tyres are not marked as 'racing purposes only'. Fit the rims to get an assessment of what sort of width you will get away with inside the bodywork.

Thanks all for the replies.
Ideally I would like to use List 1B tyres (semi slick) from the Blue book. Biggest problem is getting Toyo, Yokohama or Nankang in a size smaller than 185/60x13.

Have you checked Avon CR6ZZ available in 175 70 R 13, excellent competition tyre dry or wet, this is the tyre everyone uses for the Spa 6 hour race.

Well, I managed to squeeze on a set of Dunlop D1 replicas (5.5 inch) with 185/60 x 13 Nankang AR-1 tyres.
My only issue was tyres rubbing on the lip of the front wings until I fitted negative camber top trunnions.
Next job is to change the back axle ratio to something lower.
Onward and definitely upward!
