INVITE
Do come along and join us at Claymills Pumping Station on the edge of Burton on Trent, easily accessed from the A38 south of Derby. We’ve picked August Bank Holiday Sunday as the four working beam engines made in 1885 by Gimson of Leicester will be in steam.
In addition to those there is a Steam driven workshop, Forge and a 1930's dynamo house with early (1890's) Crompton dynamo driven by a Buxton and Thornley steam engine. In total, there’s 33 original steam engines supplied from two of the five boilers made by Thompson's 1936-37.
We have visited before and found lots to see; we went a few years ago for the first running of one of the beam engines which had just been restored. We duly turned up to see it getting into action and the person in charge asked if anyone would like to help, there seemed to be a marked lack of enthusiasm for a few seconds - so I volunteered! I’ve added “Helped start a beam engine” to my c.v. or should that be crossed it off the bucket list!
See https://claymills.org.uk/ for lots more info including an online tour – but do come for the real thing!!
Please let me know if you are able to come as they have finite car parking spaces available for us on steaming days.
