Re: Fuel sender guage replacement Mk 1
You'll need a fair bit of clearance to unscrew the gauge and then withdraw it from the top of the tank. So you'll need to lower the tank probably to the ground, which will need its filler tube to be released from the rubber boot where it passes through the rear bodywork, and the petrol pipes leading...

Re: MK2 Petrol Pipe
Yes, on my 1964 Mk2 to petrol pipe runs right down the driver side to the front cross member, then across the car under and to the front of the radiator and up into the engine compartment on the passenger side a few inches. Then it's connected to the carb inlet with a piece of flexible petrol pipe a...

Re: Youngest A40
"I still recall standing at grubby trade counters amongst professional mechanics, waiting for the inevitable negative response from a bored, disinterested storeman. Mercifully those days are past" Even in 1969, when I first got my A40 and it had not long been discontinued, I still recall the agony o...

Re: Hello, I’m new here
Regarding electronic ignition the simplest version is to keep everything except the points and condenser in the distributor and just replace these with the electronic unit. Several kits are available that come with wiring instructions - just do an online search and several will come up. Just be sure...

Re: Mirror placement
My A40 has always had mirrors fitted to the wings - as was the normal practice in the 1950s & 1960s. If the mirrors are flat glass then they do only give a very limited field of view. They need to be the readily available convex type to give an adequate field of view - as I found when I erroneously ...

Re: New Years Day treat...
I agree - the presenter was affable enough but his clear lack of mechanical sympathy set my teeth on edge quite a bit! Hammering and levering with a screwdriver to unstick the valves is not good practice, and starting an engine which has sat for 40 years without changing the oil first is, to my mind...

Re: New Years Day treat...
And despite the presenter's statements to the contrary, I'm sure that the great difficulty he had in getting the engine started was because the ignition timing was too far advanced. Backfiring through the carb - of which there was plenty - is evidence of this.

Re: Sad news…..Anders Ditlev Clausager
To be fair to Herridge & Sons their website did note that the book wouldn't be signed, despite the flyer saying it would. I hadn't realised the sad news that explains this and I guess the flyer was printed before Clausager passed away. I've just received my copy of the book and it is excellent - a f...

Re: Spares from Derek
And DVLA still insist that you "tax" the car each year - it's just that the cost of doing so is £0. I'm clearly not complaining, but you'd think DVLA could set up something like the SORN system, so you can make a single declaration that your historic vehicle is on the road and thus avoid the bureacr...

Re: Spares from Derek
Just waiting for the log book as I lost the original so I can tax it or at least go through the motions to get her legal. All the best to all. Dave. If it's more than 40 years old, you won't need to pay anything to tax it, so long as the log book shows it's registered as an "Historic Vehicle". I fo...
