I had the whole thing (felt roof etc) replaced with an insulated paneled roof -now warm, dry and bright. (Picture on FB Sam as I have no idea how to get a picture here - sure I did it once)

I don't think it is big brother I think it is simple economics - cash handling and cheque processing is time laborious and expensive - if you where charged for paying by cash (which the retailer is for cards and in most cases for paying in cash/cheques) I suspect you might move to the 'cheapest' opt...
