An American acquaintance of mine e-mailed me from their home in the 'States after watching the flight down to London.
"Surely," he said, "the Brits could have organised a helicopter to get her to Buck House instead of 'that car'?'
I had to tell him rather sharply that he'd missed the whole point of the cortege by a country mile.

Road travel south was out of the question.....on the train, nobody would have seen anything, so the RAF was the only option. Wondering why "that car" was mentioned Keith ? What did he mean ? Surely not referring to the 'plane..... ( The hearse is a special Jaguar XJ6, { the current model } ).

No, I think John assumed that a helicopter would have landed on the palace's lawns as happens at the White House forgetting, perhaps, that here we're not so hung up on privacy and display of technological power. The last Elizabethan wished to be amongst her subjects, not apart from us.
