New battery

Post by peterhawk58 » 20 Feb 2021 11:26

Hi fellow club members and nutters !
I rejoined the club 5 yrs ago when i bought another, well used, mk2 Countryman having promised myself i wouldn't buy another unless it was in tip top condition ! You know the story.
Anyway, having carried out major mechanical surgery last year i am going to convert to negative earth with alternator but i also need a new battery and was wondering if any club member could recommend a brand of battery that will fit without interfering with the alternator. I look forward to hearing from anyone on the subject whether it be informative, encouraging or humorous

I have just brought a Shield battery. Keith Bennett has one too. I'm not able to send the link sadly.

Shield are one of the UK's oldest existing hard-rubber battery manufacturers and their cells are easily get-at-able, unlike the so-called "sealed-for-life" sorts. Not only does it make maintenance a doddle (yes, even for me!), the classic "bare-top" cell connectors make this classic battery the perfect match for a classic vehicle.

They ain't cheap, but give outstanding service.

I bought a new 038 so called "budget" battery for UYH from an EBay supplier Jan 2017 £45 next day delivery 3 year warranty, absolutely no problems with it and still performing well. £140 for a battery not good value imo.
Also bought battery for wifes diesel Fusion 18 months on still good.

Sounds like a plan, Mike, but how many miles does UYH do in a week (lockdown excepted of course).
