Mirror placement

Post by Michelle » 08 Jan 2026 00:53

Hi all. I have a serious, life-changing question. (I mean, I'll have to *drill holes* in my Percy!)

- Where should I mount the outside mirrors on my A40? -

I'm in Canada and every car I've ever driven over the last 50 years, including a dozen vintage British ones, has had the mirrors on the doors.

Do wing-mounted mirrors function just as well, or are they an oldie-timey holdover?

Thanks for any advice,
Michelle

As far as I know, A40s always have/had them on the wings…..
If in doubt....kick the Ruskies OUT ❗

Door mirrors give a much wider range of view.

Totally agree with Scotty. And I’m sure they can be fitted without drilling holes, having a clamp style fitting to the window frame.

My A40 has always had mirrors fitted to the wings - as was the normal practice in the 1950s & 1960s.
If the mirrors are flat glass then they do only give a very limited field of view. They need to be the readily available convex type to give an adequate field of view - as I found when I erroneously ordered replacement flat glass mirrors!
In the UK, the Tex company offers a wide range of newly made wing mirrors to the original spec - in fact I think Tex has been in operation since the 1950s.
So wing mirrors are the "period correct" type for the A40, but I feel your hesitation to drill holes in the wings to fit them!

I used Spridget mirrors and fitting kit, it's only 2 small holes if you ever want to go back to no mirrors, I have to say I would never go back it makes reversing and parking so easy, and checking it is ok to overtake. If you are doing this the main thing before fitting is to;
make sure you can see it from your driving position.
make sure they don't stop you using your quarter lights
And when you're drilling the holes I would have the window fully up and either a short drill or a collar of tape or something to stop you going too far and possibly touching the glass.

Mine are the clip on type. Morris 1000s have a one that drills through the front corner (metal bit) of the quarterlight and are excellent. Will they do on an A40? Not sure, as the metal area on the A40 is smaller.
