Heated rear screens

Post by scotty » 05 May 2021 09:01

I am presently in discussion with Pilkington Glass re the manufacture of heated rear screens. Not an essential I know but a very useful item in todays traffic if caught out in the wet. Please add a post here to express an interest. We are looking at runs of 5 at a time. They currently have an original Saloon rear window and will quote prices on that. I will post price as soon as I am quoted.

I honestly didn't know a heated screen - front or rear - would help in wet weather. I do know that if I'm out in dirty weather (with the heater on full chat and directed up to the screen) - the glass just heats up and dries any impurities on those parts of the exterior which aren't being cleared by the wipers, thus reducing the clarity of the glass. And we all know how grubby even a standard rear screen becomes in dirty weather. Is the idea of sourcing rear screens aimed more at the racing fraternity Scotty?

Purely for road use as they are made in glass, we use plastic rear and side windows.

Oops, apologies for that. I forgot that UCE is on a strict diet!

Were they ever standard, obviously on later vehicles? It's certainly one mod i'd consider

Here comes the bad news. Prices are incl VAT.

Just been quoted by Pilkington and each screen will be £399.17 each, min quantity 10 no tooling cost.

OR

Tooling cost £2661.12, then £258.72 each as 1 off, £219.91 each as 5 off, £207.10 each as 10 off.

There was a quiet mention of may split the tooling cost with Pilkington when I spoke to them on the phone. This means £1330.56 tooling + (10 x 207.10)2071.00 = £3401.56 divided between 10 screen orders is £340.16 each, this is best option.

Not a tempting set of numbers any way you look at them. Sorry about that, was so looking forward to be able to look back.

Well at least you took time out of your very busy schedules to explore the options, and for that we're grateful.

I particularly admired your sly play on words in that final sentence!

Simon came up with a thought.

At least Pilkington have the template to make rear screens now, should the supply of used ones break down ( another to admire ), the club could get involved and sort new normal rears from that same glass we supplied to them, we have already sorted the fronts from which all the new ones are made, heated or normal.
