Once you have the heater out it is easy to dismantle to remove matrix. You could look for second hand Smiths heater from say an A60 then use that matrix. The one I found had 28 thinner tubes instead of the A40 14 tubes. If like the one I used one copper pipe was much longer so was made same length then I wrapped some copper wire then soldered to form a flange to keep hose on. The one thing I thought was important is to make sure the packing you kept or replace, will hold the matrix in place very firmly to avoid leaks due to rubbing a hole in the ends. A huge improvement on the original heat output.
