Creating an Avatar

Post by brynmor » 14 Nov 2019 13:36

An avatar is a small graphic image that appears alongside your username in posts. These can be uploaded to your profile. Common sizes on the internet are 100 x 100 pixels but this forum is set to take much larger images. The image below is actually 679 x 371px and was reduced to this from 3600 x 2400px : the image size produced by my DSLR camera.

The image was cropped and shrunk for free online at https://picresize.com/ - a totally non-technical service.

All I did was drag the original image from the desktop of my computer and drop it in the box on the screen.
I then chose to crop the image a bit and then resized it to 75% smaller.

Just save this back to your desktop and you have an image ready to upload as an avatar.

Here's the same image put through the process a second time to make it even smaller.
This is the one I used as my avatar.

Here's Dave's original avatar, shrunk using the website : https://picresize.com/

Original size: 2448 × 3264 pixels and a whopping 1.7 Mb - a real phone-data killer and fills the screen if you view his profile :o
Currently in his profile and displayed next to his posts

New size: 300 × 400 pixels and a slim 36 kb

Sorry, Dave! :D

... To use this image, just "right-click" and save to desktop. Then upload to your profile

If you are having any trouble creating a small avatar, post below and I will try to help

Cheers

I just tried doing this - always suspected I've been a techno dumbo........

The original photo of 3.3 MB was reduced to...........

8.3MB!! It obviously requires someone smarter than me to execute!

Think I'll just stick with the spanners!

Right click on mouse over picture and select "Open with" with left click, then select "Microsoft Office Picture Manager".

Along blue bar at the top select "picture", down to bottom to "Compress Picture".

Right across to blue column on right hand side, select "Web pages or E-mail messages", whilst doing this you will see the original size of file and the new size of file at the bottom under "Estimated total size".

Now click on "File" in top left corner, then "save as" and write a different name you would like to save the picture as, press "Save".

If you don't change name it will ask if you want to overwrite your original large picture.

All reduced.

Finally click "X" in top right corner to leave page and box will ask if you want to save original file, this is another option to delete your original picture in it's large format which you do not want to do, click "Don't save", this will keep your original picture safe.

"Open with", is the 17th option down the second one in the 5th box.

Thanks for the tips but.........

I didn't have (or was unable to find) all the options that you quoted to chose from.

My second attempt looked promising with, what I thought was a 487kb file........

Turned out to be 6.7MB. Got fed up now!

Jeff.

Sorry, I thought Microsoft Windows 10 was fairly standard stuff now, that's what is on our machines but I am surprised you cannot find this as this has been standard Microsoft ware for some versions.
